New Contemporaries Studio Residency and Bursary with Hospitalfield
Part of a series of exciting artist opportunities, emerging and early career artists are invited to apply to participate in a fully funded, two-week intensive residency, set in the unique and inspiring environment of Hospitalfield in Arbroath, Scotland, between Friday 5th – Friday 19th June 2026.
The residency offers artists dedicated time and space to develop a project or idea, alongside a community of interdisciplinary peers.
Applications are open to UK-based emerging or early career artists who have not had access to similar opportunities.
What does the residency opportunity comprise?
A fully funded 2-week residency, with accommodation at Hospitalfield House, in Arbroath, Scotland, and full board, with meals prepared by their chef on weekdays.
A £1,000 bursary to cover research and travel.
An additional access and care-givers bursary if applicable.
Workspace, including the recently restored 24-hour access artist studios, your room or within the house and grounds.

Who is this Residency For?
Applications will be accepted from applicants who:
Identify as an ‘emerging’ or ‘early career’ artist, and have not had access to similar opportunities*;
Are over 21 (there is no upper age limit);
Are not enrolled on or participating in a full-time or part-time undergraduate, postgraduate or similar programme during the opportunity dates;
Are based in the UK, including UK nationals and those with the right to work in the UK;
And haven't been part of New Contemporaries exhibition programme before.
*Everyone's artistic journey is different, but by these we mean that this opportunity is intended for artists that may have never participated in an artist residency; had a solo exhibition at a publicly funded gallery; or be currently represented by a commercial gallery.
At New Contemporaries we welcome applications from everyone and particularly encourage applications from artists who are currently underrepresented in the visual arts.

Accessibility
On the application form there is space for you to include any access requirements, mobility, or health factors you would like to inform us about. Hospitalfield is a 19th century artists’ house and there are several steps and stairs up to many of the rooms in the house and around the grounds.
The studios are fully accessible and have fully accessible bathroom facilities. There is access to shared and private working spaces.
Dining at Hospitalfield happens together and the residency involves being part of a group which you can engage with as much or as little as suits you.

*In your CV, where applicable please include:
Your name, address and any education history – you do not have to have studied art or studied at all to apply.
Any previous or forthcoming exhibitions (solo or group), performances, awards or grants, residencies, or any other moments in your artistic journey that you are most proud of.
Please also include links to your website or your artist social media – it’s fine if you don't have either.
