Our open call for submissions runs from 10am on 23 February to 2pm on 30 March 2026. Selected artists will join our Artist Development Programme from September 2026, culminating in a group exhibition at Focal Point Gallery (Southend-on-Sea), opening in June 2027.
We welcome submissions from emerging and early career artists based in the UK. There are no strict requirements around education, training or career path. Applicants must be over 21, with no upper age limit.
We actively encourage applications from artists who are underrepresented in the sector, including those who experience barriers linked to ethnicity, class, disability, gender and sexuality.
Artists based anywhere in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland or Wales are encouraged to apply.

How to apply
Applications are submitted through our online Submissions website during the open call period from 10am on 23 February 2026 to 2pm on 23 March 2026.
You are invited to submit up to three works that best represent your current practice, in any medium, along with a short written statement about your work and how this opportunity could support your practice.
If selected, we will work with you to agree on the final work for the exhibition. This may develop from your original submission, reflecting the natural evolution of your practice, the time between selection and the exhibition, and the overall curatorial approach.
Selections will be made based on your initial application.
There is a £25 non-refundable submission fee, payable via PayPal on the Submission site. This fee directly supports the Artist Development Programme, including mentoring, artist fees, travel, workshops, networking opportunities and access support.
Each artist may submit only one application. Duos or collectives may submit one joint application.
Accessibility
We are committed to making our application process accessible. If you have access needs or would like support with your application, please contact access@newcontemporaries.org.uk.
A step by step guide and video walkthrough of the submission process will be available on the Submissions website.

Selection process
All submissions are reviewed by a selection panel made up of artists Joy Gregory, Florence Peake and Abbas Zahedi, alongside the New Contemporaries team.
The selection process takes place in two stages. Shortlisted artists will be invited to share some additional information to support their submission.
The panel reviews all submissions and selects the final group of artists for the programme.
We carefully review every application; however, due to the high volume we receive, we’re unable to provide individual feedback.
