Viviana Almas
b. 2002, Maryland, USA. Based in London.
Viviana Almas is a Lithuanian artist based in London currently working with photography and film whose work explores collective memory and time. Blending fiction and documentary her practice creates new worlds without answers.
‘My work often starts with a place or an object. I’m drawn to remnants, desolate and liminal environments. For me, they hold the most history, and you can see human intervention more clearly there. Making work in these places feels like finding ways to preserve the past. I place a figure in these spaces and try to imagine what has happened there or what might still happen. My work sits between disappearance and survival, endings and what might come next. Books are my biggest inspiration. I like to stay with them and let ideas settle. I’m drawn to writing that’s close to life, somewhere between observation and poetry. Writers that are currently circulating in my head are Olga T okarczuk and W.S. Merwin.’
